Size Guide

Last updated:

Choosing a blanket size is less about the person and more about the place: the stroller, the crate, the sofa, the reading chair or the bed where the blanket will actually live. This guide lists the sizes Blanket Loft offers, explains what each one covers, shows you how to measure your own space in two minutes, and helps you decide when you are stuck between two sizes. If you still choose the wrong one, you can exchange it within 60 days of delivery, and return postage is free.

Sizes at a glance

  • 30 × 40 in (about 76 × 102 cm): baby, stroller, small pet.
  • 40 × 50 in (about 102 × 127 cm): toddler, lap, medium pet.
  • 40 × 60 in (about 102 × 152 cm): child, teen, single person.
  • 50 × 60 in (about 127 × 152 cm): one adult on the sofa, our most versatile size.
  • 60 × 80 in (about 152 × 203 cm): two people, or the top of a full bed.

1. The sizes we offer

Sizes are given width × length. The size names on product pages use the same labels as this table, so you can check them against each other. Not every design is offered in every size or fabric; the product page shows which combinations are available.

Blanket Loft blanket sizes (nominal)
Size option Inches Centimeters (approx.) Typical use Covers
30 × 40 in (Baby / Pet) 30 × 40 76 × 102 Stroller, car seat cover, play mat, small dog or cat bed A baby or small pet; an adult’s lap
40 × 50 in (Toddler / Kid) 40 × 50 102 × 127 Toddler nap, daycare, reading chair, medium dog A small child; an adult from knees down while sitting
40 × 60 in (Teen / Youth) 40 × 60 102 × 152 Child’s bed topper, dorm, one person on the sofa A child or teen lying down; an adult sitting
50 × 60 in (Adult / Couch) 50 × 60 127 × 152 Sofa throw, armchair, picnics, large dog One adult sitting or curled up
60 × 80 in (Couple / Full bed) 60 × 80 152 × 203 Two people on the sofa, top of a full bed, family movie night Two adults sitting; one adult lying down

Centimeter values are conversions from inches, rounded. They describe the nominal size of the blanket; see section 11 for why a finished blanket can differ slightly.

A note on our size names: the words in brackets, such as “Adult / Couch”, describe the most common use, not a rule. Plenty of adults choose 40 × 60 in for a small armchair, and plenty of families choose 60 × 80 in for one big dog. Choose by the space and the way the blanket will be used, and treat the names as a starting point.

2. How to measure your space

You need a tape measure, or a piece of string and a ruler. Measure the surface the blanket is for, then compare with the table.

Sofa or armchair

  1. Measure the seat width from arm to arm.
  2. Measure from the top of the backrest, down the seat, to the floor. This is how far a throw can drape.
  3. A throw that is a little narrower than the seat and a little shorter than the drape looks tidy when folded over the back. If you want to wrap up in it, choose a size about as long as you are tall from shoulder to toe.

Bed

  1. Measure the mattress width and length.
  2. Decide how you want the blanket to sit. As a throw across the foot of the bed, it can be narrower than the mattress. As a top layer, it should be at least the size of the mattress top.
  3. Remember that our blankets are not sized to hang over the sides of a bed like a full comforter.

Stroller, crib rail or car seat

Measure the inside width and length of the stroller seat or bassinet, then add a few inches so the blanket can be tucked. Most strollers suit 30 × 40 in. Remember that loose blankets should not be placed in a crib with a sleeping baby.

Pet bed or crate

Measure the floor of the crate or the top of the bed. For crates, choose a size that lies flat or folds once without bunching. If your pet likes to dig and nest, a slightly larger size gives them material to arrange.

Measure a blanket you already love

The quickest method of all: lay a favorite blanket flat, measure it, and choose our size nearest to it.

3. Standard mattress sizes for reference

Common mattress sizes in the United States
Mattress Inches (width × length) Suggested Blanket Loft size
Crib About 28 × 52 30 × 40 in, for supervised use only
Twin 38 × 75 40 × 60 in as a topper; 60 × 80 in to cover the top
Full 54 × 75 60 × 80 in
Queen 60 × 80 60 × 80 in as a top layer, or 50 × 60 in across the foot
King 76 × 80 60 × 80 in across the foot of the bed

Mattress sizes in Canada are similar to the United States. In Australia and New Zealand, common sizes are single (about 92 × 188 cm), double (about 137 × 188 cm), queen (about 153 × 203 cm) and king (about 183 × 203 cm). A 60 × 80 in blanket (about 152 × 203 cm) matches the top of an Australian or New Zealand queen mattress closely.

4. Choosing between two sizes

  • For wrapping up, size up. If someone likes to cocoon on the sofa, the bigger size is almost always the happier choice.
  • For display, size down. A throw folded over a sofa arm or the foot of a bed looks neater when it is not too bulky.
  • For children, think ahead. A 40 × 50 in blanket outlasts the toddler years; a 40 × 60 in one can follow a child to their first big bed.
  • For sherpa, consider weight. Sherpa is heavier than fleece, so for small children choose the smaller of two sizes.
  • For photo designs, consider detail. Larger blankets show photos bigger, which helps collages with many pictures; one small photo can look soft when stretched to 60 × 80 in.
  • For couples, choose 60 × 80 in. Anything smaller turns into a gentle tug-of-war.

5. How fabric changes the feel of a size

The same measurements feel different in different fabrics. Fleece drapes easily and folds small, so a 50 × 60 in fleece feels lighter and more flexible than the same size in sherpa. Sherpa’s thick reverse makes it stiffer and warmer, so it covers the same area but feels more substantial. Woven throws drape like a classic throw and often have a fringe or finished edge; quilts are flatter and more structured. Read more on our About Us page and the category pages for fleece and sherpa.

6. Choosing for children

Children grow quickly, so it helps to think about where the blanket will be in a year or two rather than only today. This is general guidance based on how families use our sizes, not a rule:

Suggested sizes for children by stage
Stage Suggested size Why
Newborn and baby 30 × 40 in Fits a stroller or car seat cover without dragging; ideal for supervised cuddles and photos
Toddler 40 × 50 in The classic nap and daycare size, easy for small arms to carry
School age 40 × 60 in Covers a child lying on the sofa or on top of a twin bed
Teen 40 × 60 in or 50 × 60 in Dorm beds, gaming chairs, movie nights

7. Choosing for pets

Suggested sizes for pets
Pet Suggested size Notes
Cats and small dogs 30 × 40 in Fits most small beds and carriers; folds into a crate
Medium dogs 40 × 50 in Lies flat in a medium crate or covers a dog bed
Large dogs 50 × 60 in Covers a large dog bed or the dog’s end of the sofa
Sharing the couch 60 × 80 in Protects the whole sofa seat and leaves room for people

Measure the crate or bed rather than the pet: a blanket that bunches in a crate is less comfortable than one that lies flat.

8. Buying a size for a gift

When you cannot measure the recipient’s home, two sizes are the safest choices. For an adult, 50 × 60 in works on almost any sofa or chair and is easy to fold away. For a couple or family, 60 × 80 in covers two people and the top of a full or queen bed. For a new baby, 30 × 40 in is the traditional choice, while 40 × 50 in lasts longer. If you guess wrong, the recipient can exchange the size within 60 days of delivery with free return postage.

9. Folded size and storage

Blankets arrive folded. A 30 × 40 in fleece folds to roughly the size of a hardcover book, while a 60 × 80 in sherpa makes a bundle closer to a bed pillow. If storage space is tight, or the blanket will travel in a backpack or car, fleece takes up noticeably less room than sherpa in the same size. Store blankets clean and dry, folded loosely, and away from direct sunlight to protect the print.

10. Common sizing situations

  • “It is for my mother’s reading chair.” 50 × 60 in covers her from shoulders to feet while sitting and folds neatly over the chair arm.
  • “We want a family blanket for movie nights.” 60 × 80 in, ideally in sherpa if the living room is cool.
  • “It is going in the car for road trips.” 40 × 50 in in fleece: warm enough, light, and quick to dry if a drink spills.
  • “It is a memorial blanket for the sofa.” 50 × 60 in shows a portrait clearly without overwhelming the room.
  • “Two kids share one blanket on the sofa.” 60 × 80 in, or better, two 40 × 50 in blankets with their own names so nobody argues about whose it is.
  • “It is for a college dorm.” 40 × 60 in or 50 × 60 in; dorm beds are usually twin XL, and a throw on top is easier to wash than a full comforter.

11. Why a finished blanket can differ slightly

Each blanket is cut, sewn and finished individually, so the finished measurement can differ slightly from the nominal size in the table. Fabric relaxes after unpacking, sherpa’s plush edge can make a blanket look a little larger, and quilts can draw in slightly after their first wash as the stitched layers settle. Where a product’s finished dimensions are known to differ from the nominal size, the product page states them. If your blanket arrives noticeably smaller or larger than the size you ordered, measure it flat, send us a photo with the tape measure, and we will treat it as a problem under our Returns & Exchanges Policy.

12. Wrong size? Exchanging is easy

If the size is not right, start an exchange within 60 days of delivery. Return the unused blanket with our free return label, tell us the size you want, and we make a new blanket in that size once your return arrives. If the new size costs more, we tell you the difference before charging it; if it costs less, we refund the difference. See Returns & Exchanges and Refund Policy.

Already ordered and just realized the size is wrong? If it is within 24 hours of ordering, you can change the size for free before the blanket is made. See Cancel or Change an Order.
